Ian was originally on the dominant Koror Tribe. Ian would quickly form a tight-nit alliance with Tom Westman, Katie Gallagher, Gregg Carey and Jenn Lyon. They were opposed by Willard Smith, Coby Archa, Caryn Groedel and Janu Tornell. Koror dominated in the Challenges against Ulong but a twist saw both Tribes go to Tribal Council, and Willard was unanimously voted out for being the weakest. Koror continued to dominate until Stephenie LaGrossa, the last remaining member of Ulong, was absorbed into Koror. Stephenie was an immediate target but Coby's attitude really bugged the Koror Alliance, so they decided to vote him off first. At the next Tribal, Gregg wanted to vote Stephenie, while Tom lobbied to keep Stephenie and vote out Janu, who didn't want to be there anyway. They ended up deciding that Stephenie will be the target. However, Janu quit at the Tribal Council, which means that Stephenie got a pass, but not for long, as she was voted out next. The next target was Caryn but Caryn pointed out to Ian that after they get rid of her, Gregg, Katie and Jenn will target him. Ian believed her and he and Tom came up with a plan. They decided to force a tie and take the risk of drawing rocks. Ian won Immunity so he wasn't at risk but Tom was willing to take the risk. However, when Ian told Katie about their plan, she jumped ship, so Gregg was voted out. Katie then got mad at Ian for taking Tom on Reward when he had promised Katie that he'd take her. Because of her anger, Caryn tried to get Katie and Jenn to help vote out Ian. However, the girls stuck with Ian and got rid of Caryn instead. Later on, Jenn and Katie talked to Ian and he agreed that if Tom didn't win Immunity, he'd have to go. When Tom won Immunity, Jenn told Tom about Ian wanting to vote Tom out. This angered Tom, so he joined Jenn in targetting Ian. Together, they forced a tie between Ian and Jenn, where Ian won a firemaking contest to stay in the game. With his friendships with Tom and Katie both heavily damaged, Ian decided to step down from the Final Immunity Challenge, with the terms that Tom would take Katie to the Final Two, which he did.
In the Final Tribal Council, Ian voted for Tom to win the game, which he did.

Trivia
- Ian is the fourth-tallest Survivor contestant, at 6'8" (207 cm). He is just short of Cliff Robinson, Scot Pollard, and Mitchell Olson, who are 6' 10" (208 cm), 6' 11" (210 cm), and 7 feet (213 cm) respectively.
- Ian was the youngest member of Koror.
- Ian was the first male to win the fire making tiebreaker. Ian was also the first castaway to win a fire making challenge at the final four as Stephenie LaGrossa won her fire making challenge as a result of Ulong being decimated to its last two members.
- Ian is the first of three contestants to have been verbally voted out, without a formal vote taking place. He would be followed by Brandon Hantz in Survivor: Caramoan, and Jeff Varner in Survivor: Game Changers.
- Because Palau was the first season with 20 castaways, Ian was the first castaway to be the 18th person eliminated from a season.
- Ian was offered a chance to return for Survivor: Cambodia, but he declined.
